Tactility: Residential Renovation

Kitchen renovation for a private client

The client had need of a complete renovation of an existing space, down to replacement of joinery and installing new insulation in the external walls. Emphasis was placed on building a functional space, that did not compromise on contemporary style.

Materials were chosen for their durability while retaining natural warmth and tactility.

Key requirements of the brief were to provide ample, efficient storage, while maximising workspace so that multiple people can comfortably use the space at one time. With the kitchen located at the northern-most corner of the house, it was also critical to provide a bright, open room that brought light into the centre of the home.

Torrere

A generously sized, minimalist timber clock, with a shou sugi ban inspired finish.

Shou sugi ban (charred cedar board) refers to a Japanese technique for preserving timber through controlled scorching of its surface. This burns away softer fibres and seals the surface, transforming the grain into a raised, textural relief.

The piece is cut to expose the clean, natural edge of the timber and finished with a simple oil finish.
